Its about 1:30 am and I just got home from Tavern On The Green. Located in the heart of New York City’s Central Park, Tavern On The Green is a restaurant that is always talked about and had been one of the place I’ve always wanted to try. This week they offered a special Restaurant Week prix fixe menu featuring an appetizer, entree, and dessert. We (a total party of eight) were able to get a reservation for 8:00 pm on a friday with only about a weeks notice. We arrived about 5 minutes past our reservation time and were greeted by the doorman and then proceeded to the main entrance area where we checked our coat.
The decor inside ranged from exposed beams, rustic and for lack of a better word “Tavern Like” to mirrored hallways and giant brass roosters. There were many windows areas that were nice to gaze out of. Through the window we could see a wedding reception taking place which i guess wouldn’t have been to bad but we could also hear the music in the background during dinner. I have nothing against the Michael Jackson but “Beat It” Is not really what I prefer to hear when i go to “nice” restaurant for dinner. The overall ambience was a little noisy especial with bigger receptions going on in other rooms. Our waiter was nice, but nothing great. He didn’t tell us his name, didn’t really explain to us any specials, just past out the menus and explained there was a Restaurant Week menu available and a quick display of the wine list. No small talk, no recommendations. There was also a photographer that came around and took a picture of our group and tried to sell it to us in a matted frame for $20 each. That should just be against the law. When you go to Disney World that is completely acceptable, when your paying NY city prices for food its just a bit to tourist.
The Food was okay, but nothing great. As an appetizer I had a mushroom ravioli with green peas. The ravioli was a bit thin but the mushroom taste and texture was good but not memorable. I also had a chance to taste the black bean and chorizo soup which bascially tasted like black beans with a slight spice of chorizo here and there. The presentation of the soup was nice though the waiter brought it in a nice silver container and poured it out into the bowl for each guest. As an entree I choose a herb and bread crumb crusted piece of chicken with french style green beans and risotto cooked in a vegetable stock. I liked the risotto the chicken was a very decent sized portion and almost tough to finish. It tasted okay but could have been seasoned a little heavier. For dessert I choose chocolate cake with fresh berries and raspberry sauce. The berries tasted very fresh and the chocolate cake was very light and airy. This was favorite course out of three.
Looking back the experience was not a bad but not extraordinary. At many times the service and food seemed more like attending a wedding then a fine eating establishment. I tend to like salt and the dishes seemed slightly under seasoned to my taste. There was nothing here I tasted that I would go back for. I would consider dining there again but only in early summer or fall if there was available seating out doors in the surrounding areas.
If you go… Go to go and say you have went but don’s set high expectations for the food or service.

Mama Theresa’s Pizzeria and Restaurant is located on Hempstead Turnpike in Eastmeadow in a strip of stores very close to the Stop and Shop and Walmart shopping center. Mama Theresa’s is pizza done right. The regular slice is on the money and eating the buffalo chicken slice is like having super bowl sunday on a slice. The quality and care gone into finding good ingredients comes across in every bite. I look foward to trying some of the other items on the menu in the future.

Chipolte, has now given you 1 more reason to buy an iphone. The restaurant chain has created an application for the iphone that lets you place an order directly from your iphone. If your in the mood for a burritto thats almost impossible to finish stop in at one of the many Chipolte Grill restaurant in the Long Island area. When i have went there the service has been good and to make ordering from the menu faster they have made an Iphone application. Chipolte is definitely a step up from the usual menu at Taco Bell. Fresher more natural ingredients like chicken, roasted pork, beans and rice also justify the price difference from Taco Bell. If you are ever at an afternoon islander game the Hempstead Tpke location is a much healthier alternative to McDonalds.

Moe’s Southwestern Grill
I stopped by Moe’s Southwest Grill this afternoon for lunch. Moes has go to be the best place to get a burrito in Long Island. They do offer other things on the menu like fajitas, nachos, and the usual tex mex goods as well. If your going to Moe’s though your going for a burrito. The burritos are priced at about $7. Needless to say one burrito will more than likely stuff you. I had the “Joey Bag Of Donuts” Burrito. I dont really get the name but it had nice helpings of rice, cheese, pic da gallo, chicken (you can your choice of pork, chicken or steak) and beans. The burrito also came with some warm salted tortilla chips on the side to round out the meal.
All i can really say was that the burrito was stuffed and delicious and I was stuffed when i finished it. Ive tried some burritos at other places on Long Island but theres no competition for Moe’s. Taco King in Franklin Square has reaally great Tacos and Quesdillas but they cant keep a burrito together. There is nothing worse than trying to eat a burrito with the tortilla fallinng apart and food coming out of it. Moe’s has better tasting ingredients and seals the Tortilla on the grill. Once they roll the burrito its closed for good. There is also a big difference in the quality of ingredients. Moe’s uses good fresh ingedients and you can taste it. If you want myestery meat in a bag go to Taco Bell.
Moe’s is a great place for a healthy filling lunch and will satisfy your “Run To The Border” crave with out having to get 10 tacos off the $0.99 cent menu and run to the bathroom later.

Major’s Steak House
So last night I made my way though the Long Island weather to Majors Steakhouse in East Meadow. The popular steak house was not pakced at all but that was due to the April Nor Easter. Other people i know that have eaten there tell me the place is always full and for good reason. The Steak is right on the money.
Upon sitting down in the restaurant I was served a bowl of complimentary assorted pickles. A nice change to the usually free Cheesy biscuits or Tortilla chips. In the pickled selection there was also a pickled red pepper of some sort that looked kind of like a tomato. It was both sweet and spicy and kept my lips smacking with heat while I waited for the main course.
About 10 minutes into my wait for the main course I was presented with the goods. I had ordered the Majors Steak which was a 24 oz Rib Eye loaded with beef. At a little more than an inch thick and seared to perfection my mouth was watering. I had a few bites and realized this was just Rib Eye heaven. The steak was not seasoned heavily. The steak was cooked to allow the true flavor of the cut and meat come through. After a few bites I was reaching for the steak sauce out of curiosity. How much better could this get? Well.. Alot. Major’s Signature Steak Sauce is sweet, tangy and delivers a nice little bit courtesy of the Horseradish on the ingredient’s list. It also taste like it would be pretty mean with shrimp too… The steak was served with your choice of potatoe. I went with the fries. They were okay but next time i would probbly try the mashed Potatoes.
Over all it was a great place. A steak and a glass of wine could set you back about $30 to $40 per person. With all that steak it would have been nice for them to toss in a free garden salad or vegetable with the meal. They do offer them as additional items at about $3 to $4 each. The over all look of Majors Steak House was simple, sports meets western. Autographed New York Jets Footballs and other sports memoriblia are showcased with pictures of cowboys and cows. I like meat alot but sitting there eating a 24 oz Rib Eye steak with pictures of Cows looking at me did make me feel kind of bad. Sure was good though.
Next time i’m going for the Porter House and mashed Potatoes.
